How Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning) Actually Works — and Why It's the Gold Standard

    April 28, 2026 7 min readBy Frank – Brothers Carpet & Restoration

"Steam cleaning" is a bit of a misnomer. We don't actually use steam; we use Hot Water Extraction (HWE). It is the only method that cleans the entire carpet fiber from the base to the tip.

    The Four Pillars of Cleaning

To clean anything effectively, you need a balance of four things (known in the industry as Sinner's Circle):

    • Chemicals: Specialized pre-sprays that break the bond between the soil and the fiber.
    • Heat: Hot water thins out oils and greases, making them easier to extract.
    • Agitation: Physically loosening the soil so it can be picked up.
    • Time: Allowing the chemicals to work before extraction.

    Why Truck-Mounted Power Matters

A portable machine you rent at the store uses your home's electricity to heat water and create suction. It's limited by a 15-amp circuit. Our truck-mounted system is powered by a large engine that generates 200°F+ water and enough vacuum pressure to pull water out of the carpet pad.

This power is the difference between a carpet that stays wet for two days and a carpet that is dry in a few hours.

    The Process

We don't just "shampoo" your carpet. We perform a high-pressure rinse and extraction. Think of it as a power-washer for your floors that immediately sucks the water back up. This removes not just the dirt, but also the cleaning residues that other methods leave behind.
